Dianne Chenier possesses an MA in Ethnic Studies and an MS in Library Science with an emphasis on "multicultural materials for teachers and librarians ".  She is a former educator of 35 years having served in the following capacities: 18 years as a classroom teacher of grades 1st, 2nd and 3rd; 5 years as a teacher mentor for improved classroom instruction in the field of reading; 12 years as the District Library Supervisor for eight K-6 buildings and one Junior High; part-time adjunct professor at Chicago State University in the Department of Library Science.

After retiring, 15 years ago, Dianne is now able to devote more time to her passion for traveling to different countries to learn about other cultures around the world. During her adulthood, she has visited 50 countries.  She says: "If I could stop myself from returning to the Tuscan region of Italy there would have been 4 additional countries added to that count!" For the past year, she has proudly served as an Ambassador for Road Scholar. Dianne is available to give presentations to any adult organization interested in learning more about Road Scholar and the types of educational programs that are offered.

"Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon"

Larry Tye is a New York Times bestselling author whose most recent book is a biography of Robert F. Kennedy, the former attorney general, U.S. senator, and presidential candidate, exploring RFK's extraordinary transformation from cold warrior to fiery leftist.

Tye's first book, The Father of Spin, is a biography of public relations pioneer Edward L. Bernays. Home Lands looks at the Jewish renewal underway from Boston to Buenos Aires.  Rising from the Rails explores how the black men who worked on George Pullman's railroad sleeping cars helped kick-start the Civil Rights movement and gave birth to today's African-American middle class. Shock, a collaboration with Kitty Dukakis, is a journalist's first-person account of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), psychiatry's most controversial treatment, and a portrait of how that therapy helped one woman overcome debilitating depression.  Satchel is the biography of two American icons - Satchel Paige and Jim Crow. Superman tells the nearly-real life story of the most enduring American hero of the last century.

In addition to his writing, Tye runs the Boston-based Health Coverage Fellowship, which helps the media do a better job reporting on critical issues like public health, mental health, and high-tech medicine. Launched in 2001 and supported by a series of foundations, the fellowship trains a dozen medical journalists a year from newspapers, radio stations, and TV outlets nationwide.

From 1986 to 2001, Tye was an award-winning reporter at The Boston Globe, where his primary beat was medicine. He also served as the Globe's environmental reporter, roving national writer, investigative reporter, and sports writer. Before that, he was the environmental reporter at The Courier-Journal in Louisville and covered government and business at The Anniston Star in Alabama.

Tye, who graduated from Brown University, was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1993-94. He taught journalism at Boston University, Northeastern, and Tufts.

GUEST SPEAKER / PROGRAM:  Jian Ping, Author presents her book Mulberry Child  

Jian Ping grew up during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) in China, living through traumatic chaos and hardship. She worked in Beijing for four years after college and came to the U.S. to do her graduate studies in the mid-1980s. Since the publication of Mulberry Child, Jian Ping has been featured on Chicago Tonight Show with Phil Ponce at WTTW, the Asian American Network News, SuncasTV and numerous radio and newspaper interviews in the United States and Canada.

Today, Jian Ping works as a contributing writer at Xinhua News Agency and China Daily, two major media outlets from China. She is also a columnist at Asian Wisconzine, a monthly magazine in the Midwest.  Jian Ping was a recipient of the Florence Bear Picker Fellowship from the Ragdale Foundation and held a Ragdale residency. Her other publications include China in the Next 30 Years (CCTP, Beijing, guest-editor, 2016), Chinese Film Theory (Praeger, New York, co-editor, 1989), and A Fool's Paradise (Xiwang Publishing, China, translator, 1984).

Jian Ping has a bachelor's degree in English from Jilin University, Changchun, China and dual master's degrees in Film and International Affairs from Ohio University. She is on the adjunct faculty at DePaul University and a member of the Chicago Sister Cities International.  She founded MoraQuest in 2008 and works as a consultant in Sino-U.S. cultural exchange programs and business dealings.

GUEST SPEAKER / PROGRAM:  Author James R. Garrett presents his book Leftovers: Remembrance of Duty

James Garrett, a U.S. Army combat veteran, hails from a small Pennsylvania town where he was born, to join the U.S. Army and become a Green Beret.  As an LRP operative, he was attached to Special Operations Groups in Korea and Vietnam, where his missions were recovery and extraction. As a combat veteran, he has received written commendations for his military service to our nation from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, the DAV, and the Illinois State House of Representatives.

A martial arts instructor, Garrett, has received extensive media recognition, including Black Belt Magazine, UPI, AP, and TV networks.  He has taught martial arts to all ages and pioneered martial arts for the disabled. His skills have been recognized by all forms of the media.  Many law enforcement officers have benefited from his teachings in unarmed urban combat.

To James Garrett, the most important tenets are Duty * Honor * Loyalty

Topic:  The Forgotten Hero of My Lai, the biography of Hugh Thompson

A new piece of American history is presented in the new, Revised Edition of Angers' book, The Forgotten Hero of My Lai, and he'll be explaining it to the public during a talk while in Chicago. Even before the Watergate scandal of 1972-74 that brought down his Presidency, Richard Nixon was deeply involved in another illegal action that could have been grounds for impeachment.  It is now clear, after extensive research, that Nixon initiated a campaign to sabotage the My Lai trials so no American soldier would be convicted of a war crime. His motive was to try to control the damage being done to the reputation of the U.S. military in the wake of the revelation of the My Lai massacre. This previously unknown White House scandal - a new piece of American history - is revealed in the newly published Revised Edition of The Forgotten Hero of My Lai: The Hugh Thompson Story.

The author is veteran journalist Trent Angers of Lafayette, La., who was nominated in 2000 and 2001 for the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writings about Thompson's heroic actions during the Vietnam War.

For the first time ever in entertainment history, the story of the My Lai Massacre - and the heroic soldier who stopped it - is being brought to the American stage. The musical/monodrama titled "My Lai" will be performed at the Harris Theater in Chicago on the evening of Friday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. While the play was performed at Stanford University in October, the coming performance in Chicago is being billed as the fully staged version - The World Premier. Prior to the performance and afterward, Hugh Thompson's biographer, Trent Angers, will be on hand to talk with patrons about Thompson's heroism in stopping the My Lai massacre. (Angers, a seasoned journalist, and editor from south Louisiana, was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work on the Hugh Thompson story.)
